Rick Smith Takes Opening Day Win at Bethel Motor Speedway!
BETHEL, NY(April 28, 2013) – As the gates swung open on the 2013 season at Bethel Motor Speedway this past Saturday, cars poured into the pit area, with both veteran and new drivers all looking to take home the first checkered flags of the year. At the end of the day, there were three first-time winners, two defending champions got their season started in Victory Lane, and five other drivers added wins to their resumes.
Each and every time Pennsylvania native Rick Smith comes to Bethel to compete in the Pro Stock class, he is a contender to win. This past Saturday, he proved that to still be true in the new season, as he collected his first win of the year. The win was by no means an easy one, as he had his hands full with young standout Jerry Tunney early in the race. Tunney snatched the lead four laps into the race, forcing Smith to turn up the heat in order to regain the top spot. Tunney was involved in an incident just prior to the halfway point that forced him to restart in the rear and changed the face of the race, as Smith then had to take on the challenges of Beryle Herman. Smith and Herman pulled away from the field and Jim Helt – who had started fifth - ran in a strong third. In spite of every effort, Herman was unable to take the lead, and Herman had to be content with second as Smith grabbed his first win of the year. Helt finished third.
PRO STOCK FEATURE FINISH (20 laps): 1. RICK SMITH, 2. Beryle Herman, 3. Jim Helt, 4. Jerry Tunney, 5. John Hager, 6. Larry O'Donnell, 7. Kenny Atkins, 8. Joe Barnes, 9. Steve Vasey, 10. Arthur McArthur, 11. Mark Sylvester.
